How to Get the Most Out of Therapy

Psychotherapy is a collaborative process.  Your therapist brings training and experience, and your participation plays an important role in how helpful therapy can be. The tips below are meant to support you in getting the most from your sessions.

Tips for Making Therapy Work for You

1. Be Honest and Open: Therapy works best when you share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences as openly as you can — even when it feels uncomfortable. There is no “right” or “wrong” thing to say.

2. Attend Consistently: Regular sessions help build trust and momentum. Try to arrive on time and attend consistently so you can use the full session effectively.

3. Be Patient with the Process: Progress often happens gradually and may not always feel linear. Some sessions may feel more impactful than others — this is normal.

4. Reflect and Practice Between Sessions: Therapy doesn’t only happen during sessions. Paying attention between appointments can deepen the work. You may find it helpful to:

• Notice emotional reactions or patterns

• Write down thoughts or questions to share in your next session

• Practice skills discussed in therapy so you can learn what works for you

5. Share What Is and Isn’t Helpful: Your therapist values your feedback. Let them know what feels useful and what doesn’t so therapy can be tailored to your needs.

6. Clarify and Revisit Goals: Having a sense of what you want from therapy can provide direction. Goals may change over time, and that’s okay.

7. Expect Some Discomfort: Exploring emotions or changing patterns can feel challenging. Discomfort doesn’t mean something is wrong — it can be part of growth.

8. Practice Self-Compassion: Change takes time. Be kind to yourself and acknowledge the effort you’re making.

9. Ask Questions: If you’re unsure about anything — the process, techniques, or goals — ask. Understanding therapy can help you feel more engaged and empowered.

10. Remember Therapy Is a Partnership: You and your therapist work together. Your experiences, preferences, and voice matter.

Therapy is an investment in yourself. Showing up with curiosity, honesty, and patience can make a meaningful difference.
